Re: Alleged fraudulent transaction in the Aiyetoro branch of Wema Bank
Our attention has been drawn to an erroneous publication centered around an alleged financial transaction between one Mr Nojeem Ogundele, who came to the Aiyetoro Branch of our bank to deposit the sum of three hundred and six thousand naira only (N306,000.00) into the account of his master, Mr Emmanuel Obi (one of our customers) and an unknown man, on the 12th of October 2022,who is said to have absconded with the money.
According to the report, Mr Ogundele, in an apparent bid to beat the long queue in the banking hall on that fateful day, was said to have sought the assistance of a man, who he thought was a staff of the bank, and handed over the sum of three hundred and fifty thousand naira (N350,000.00 only) to facilitate the deposit transaction.
When the bank learned about the incident, the management ordered an investigation into the incident to ascertain what actually happened with a view to knowing how to address the issue.
Our investigation revealed that the victim, in a bid to beat the long queue in the banking hall, sought the assistance of a stranger he met in the banking hall who, he thought, was a staff of the bank, to deposit the sum of three hundred and six thousand naira (N306,000.00) into the account of his master.
The stranger, however, absconded with the cash without making the lodgment.
While Mr Ogundele did not make a formal complaint about the incident to the bank management, he reported the case to a Police Station at Aiyetoro, Ogun State, who brought the issue to the knowledge of the bank. We are fully cooperating with the law enforcement agency to ensure that the perpetrator of this dastardly act is apprehended and brought to justice.
We have commenced discussions with Mr Eze, the owner of the money, to see how this issue could be addressed in the most amicable way.
We use this opportunity to advise our customers to only deal with the known staff of the bank or approach the Customer Services desks located in all the banking halls for any assistance to avoid similar outcomes in the future.
